Introduction to European Competition Law

Vak
2011-2012

Admission requirements

Evident basic knowledge of European law (recommended reading: Craig & de Búrca, EU Law, Text, Cases and Materials, Oxford University Press)

Description

Over the years, European competition law has almost become a specialisation in itself. This course provides the participants with an opportunity to become familiar with the relevant legislation, case law and practice.

The first part of the course focuses on the core of European competition law: the prohibition of cartels and the prohibition of an abuse of a dominant position. The second part of the course concentrates on various related subjects, such as the enforcement of competition law, merger control and the multi-jurisdictional context in which European competition law is applied (i.e. applied simultaneously with US antitrust law and competition law of the 27 EC Member States).

The participants will be introduced to both the substantive and procedural aspects of this area of European law and to the system of case law of the Courts of the European Union and will be taught to systematically read and analyse cases as well as legislation of the European Commission. Furthermore, students will be introduced to carrying out legal research in European law through the internet in order to acquire the skills which are vital in their further career.
During the course, students will be required to familiarise themselves thoroughly with the materials of the subject matter. Active participation of the students during classes is required.

Classes will be interactive; students are expected to participate in discussions on case-law.
