Description

This course introduces students to a number of influential social theorists, whose work is cited continuously throughout the humanities and social sciences: Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, Edward Said, Michel Foucault en John Maynard Keynes. Two sessions are devoted to each thinker and explore texts by and about the subjects.

Course objectives

Achieving familiarity with the work of five classic social theorists.
Training skills in discussing theoretical texts, both verbally and in writing.
Exploring the relevance of social theory to the historical profession and the students own research.
Reflecting on the position of history vis a vis other humanities and social sciences.

Mode of instruction

Research Seminar.

Course Load

  • 20 hours of lectures.

  • 40 hours preparing short papers.

  • 120 hours reading material.

  • 100 hours preparing final paper.

Assessment method

Five short papers (1000 words), one final paper (5000 words), participation.
