The Local Politics and Governance in Taiwan: A Comparative Perspective

Description

The goal of the course is to examine the development of Taiwan’s local democracy, politics and governance. Attending to the processes of globalization and localization, this course adopts a comparative perspective to analyze the context, factors and questions in relation to the local politics and governance in Taiwan, which shall facilitate an understanding of the diverging experiences across the Taiwan Strait. Through an extensive discussion of case studies, the course highlights the directions and challenges of Taiwan’s and China’s future development, and the importance of local self-governance to the development of democratization and governance in this globalizing world.

Course objectives

Understanding of political development on all levels in a complex and multifaceted situation like Taiwan’s; ability to find, process and evaluate the relevant literature; report on research process and subsequently generated ideas both orally and on paper.

  • Writing of paper: 40
    Total: 140 hours

Assessment method

  1. a written paper of about 3500 words (term paper): 60%
    1. two other assignments, one written (30%), one an oral presentation (10%)
