Optional Courses

All (Research) MA courses offered at level 500 or higher can be followed as optional course. It is advisable to take these courses in the third semester of the programme. Alternatively, student can opt for a research based internship or study abroad as an optional course. Both alternative options are strongly encouraged.

Optional Courses Leiden University

Optional Courses include, but are not limited to, the courses offered by the History Institute.

Classics

For students who will not go abroad within their Optional Course space, it will be obligatory to fill 10 EC of their Optional Course space with the course Classics.

Study Abroad

Leiden University offers the option to follow optional courses and/or write your thesis abroad, more information is available on the Internationalisation website.

Internships

For more information on a possible internship during your (Research) Master, you can check the website of the Humanities Careers Centre. Please note that your internship should be a fulltime position for at least three months. Your internship will need to be supervised by a professor within the History Department.

If you opt for an internship or to follow courses at other departments/universities, you will need to submit a request to the Board of Examiners of History beforehand.
