Research Internship Psychology (RMSc)

Vak
2018-2019

Admission requirements

Open to master students of the MSc Psychology(research).

Course objectives

The aim of the internship is for students to gain hands-on experience in their area of interest by learning from expert researchers in the field. It is recommended that students become acquainted with various research designs and/or methods of data collection and analysis that extend those employed for their thesis. Students could do this by participating, for example, in designing a study, data collection and data analyses, observing lab and testing situations and reading the involved research proposals. Preparations for the internship that are directly work-related (reading, communication with supervisor, writing funding letters) are part of the internship.

Registration

Mode of instruction

Assessment method

At the end of their internship, students write an internship report. This report is a summary of activities the student has done during the internship rather than a summary of research outcomes (i.e., focusing on the internship process rather than on the results of the research). The internship report format is determined and prescribed by the student’s supervisor at the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University (i.e., the internal examiner) and may differ between tracks, supervisors, and students, depending on the particular characteristics of the internship. The report is usually between 5 and 10 pages of text. Evaluation of the internship is done by the internal examiner1. The internship report forms the primary basis for the grade. In case of an internship outside the institute, it is custom and desirable that the internal examiner consults the external supervisor at the internship location or another staff member at the institute where the internship has taken place.

The Institute of Psychology follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences to systematically check student papers for plagiarism with the help of software. Disciplinary measures will be taken when fraud is detected. Students are expected to be familiar with and understand the implications of this fraud policy.
