Admission requirements

JRP-1 has successfully been completed and the report has been handed in at DOO. The courses Strategy, Marketing (SBB), Financial management and Technology and operations management (or equivalent, see OER BMS) have successfully been completed. Furthermore, the course How to write a research proposal has successfully been completed and the internship proposal (312300100Y) for JRP-II has also been handed in at DOO.

Description

The number of ECTS will be between 26.0-42.0.
As a biomedical sciences student you have been trained to develop analytical skills, the attitude for problem solving and the ability to learn fast as well as to apply creative thinking. This rather unique skill set is necessary to become a good researcher. At the same time, these qualifications are also valuable for in​-dustry and business. Many companies are looking for graduates who will be able to fulfil challenging jobs requiring the above mentioned skills. The management internship enables you to combine your biomedical background with newly acquired business skills and to become acquainted with the world outside research. It represents an opportunity to use and advance your knowledge and skills in a business context. Over the course of the internship you become familiar with subject matter expertise and competencies required to be successful in a particular industry- or functional- domain. As part of the internship, you will also attend and complete assignments for five management sessions that are organised during the academic year that cover topics from the areas of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management that are relevant to workplace issues you may encounter in interactions with colleagues and line managers.

Course objectives

The objectives of the internship will be defined in the internship proposal written prior to the start of the internship (see guidelines proposal on Blackboard). While the specific objectives for the internship are different for each project, the objectives of an internship will be defined across the following interlinked domains:

  • Execution of (a) project(s) at an academic level within a company or organisation – i.e. definition of deliverables and milestones.

  • Subject matter expertise – i.e. what is the subject matter expertise that the student will make his/her own during the internship?

  • Personal skills development – i.e. which are the skills that the student will develop to successfully complete the internship?
    At the end of the internship the student has learned to execute one or more projects at a company or organisation, to write a report thereof at the academic master’s level and to formally present his/her results to a team. In both practical work, writing and presenting the student should demonstrate his or her:

  • knowledge and understanding of the field, thus providing a basis and opportunity for originality in developing and applying ideas;

  • problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments;

  • ability to integrate knowledge, to handle complexity and to work independently;

  • ability to clearly communicate conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underlying these conclusions, to specialist audiences and non-specialist audiences.

  • academic level in working and thinking;

  • ability to reflect on career options and patterns of work.

Mode of instruction

Management internship; At the end of the internship, the student must present and document his/her results both in a written report and by an oral presentation for the department. Following the internship, the student will also present his/her results in an oral presentation to a lay audience during the graduation ceremony.

Assessment method

At the end of the internship, the student is assessed on the following aspects: - Project activities (knowledge level and development, analytical skills, communication, work quality, work attitude, organizational, skills, teamwork)

  • Written report (content; writing skills)

  • Oral presentation (content/structure, presentation skills)

  • Value added to the organization

  • Personal development

Twelve weeks after the internship has begun, the supervisor fills in the interim assessment form and discusses this with the student. Together they define the students’ strong points and points for improvement. The student also provides feedback to the supervisor. The interim assessment form is based on the final assessment form and discusses the project activities. More detailed information on the assessment can be obtained through the assessment forms available through Blackboard.

-Guidelines for a successful internship are provided on Blackboard.
-JRP-II needs to be approved beforehand by the Master’s Internship Committee. Therefore, please send in an application form at least two weeks before the foreseen start of your project to the BMS coordinator M,E,C,H specialisations. JRP-II is subject to the Procedures Training Periods/Research Projects. These regulations require detailed written agreements in the application form between supervisor and student, that specify the conditions for the Project. Please consult these regulations beforehand through LUMC’s educational webpages (or Blackboard) and act accordingly.
