Final Grade
Only when you pass the exams, your final grade will be determined in combination of the following items:

  • Attendance: 2%

  • Assignments: 18%
    1) Weekly vocabulary quiz: 5%
    2) Workbook 4%
    3) Composition 9% (3% x 3 compositions)

  • Midterm: 30%
    1) Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, and Conversations 15 %
    2) Listening and Reading 15%

  • Final: 50%
    1) Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, and Conversations 20%
    2) Listening and Reading 20%
    3) Oral (Task 3% and Interview 7%) 10%

Assignment Policy

  • Your assignment grade should be 6.0 or higher to pass the course. In other words, if you fail to submit high-quality assignments in a timely manner, you may fail the course even if your overall course grade is 6.0 or higher. Your diligent and sincere effort is highly valued.

  • Assignments submitted two or more weeks late will not be graded: i.e. if you submit many assignments at the end of the semester all at once, they will not be counted toward your assignment grade. If you have a valid reason to submit your assignment late, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the course coordinator, Mw. H. Bae.

Resit Policy

  • If you fail to meet the attendance requirement, you will fail the course with no resit chance.

  • If you fail to receive 6.0 or higher from combined assignments grade, you will fail the course with no resit chance. You can prevent this by regular vocabulary study and punctual submission of your assignments.

  • You have 2 resit chances for vocabulary quiz upon request, within 2 weeks of the original quiz date.

  • There is no resit after the midterm written exams even if your grade is lower than 6.0.

  • If your weighted average grade of midterm and final for “Vocab, Grammar, Expressions, and Conversation” is below 6.0, you need to resit only for this portion. This resit covers the entire material of the relevant area of the course and the mark will replace both midterm and final (thus, 35% of the final grade).

  • If your average grade of midterm and final for “Listening and Reading” is below 6.0, you need to resit only for this portion. This resit covers the entire material of the relevant area of the course and the mark will replace both midterm and final (thus, 35% of the final grade).

  • Even if your average grades of written exams are 6.0 or higher, you are to resit if either your midterm or final written exam is below 5.0.

  • Final oral exam consists of two components. You should receive overall 6.0 or higher to pass the oral exam. If you fail to receive 5.5 or higher in any component(s) (even if the average of the two is over 6.0), you need to resit the failed component(s).

Attendance Policy

  • As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance for all seminars is expected.

  • Failure to attend results in a lower grade (no penalty for the first two absences, but you will lose 0.5% each of your final grade from the third absence and on).

  • If you are late for class three times, it will be considered as one absence.

  • If you do not attend more than 6 classes (i.e. 7th absence and on), you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or assignments may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason not to attend, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the coordinator of studies, Ms. Kraakman, on this.

To pass the course and leave for study abroad, you need to accomplish:

  • Decent attendance record (no more than 6 absences)

  • Assignment grade of 6.0 or higher

  • Exam grade of 6.0 or higher from all three components of the exams: 1) Vocabulary, Grammar, Expressions, and Conversation; 2) Listening and Reading; and 3) Oral (6.0 or higher for overall oral grade and minimum grade of 5.5 for individual components of oral exam)

  • If you fail to fulfil any single one requirement mentioned above, you cannot continue your study.

Debriefing exam: Within two weeks after exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Blackboard in order for students to view their exam.

Blackboard

Blackboard will supplement the off-line class (e.g. extra course materials/self-study materials, announcement, grade check, etc.).
