Description
Once a haven of almost boring political stability despite deep social divisions, the Netherlands currently faces political turmoil as populist parties are on the rise and the electorate is growing ever more unpredictable. This course offers an overview of the Dutch Political system (its transition from republic to monarchy, the evolution of consociational democracy, its political parties and highly proportional electoral system, government by coalition, neo-corporatist policy-making, and the Netherlands in the European Union and the world. The course will analyse these themes comparing the Dutch experience to other political systems and to comparative politics theories,
Course objectives
Reproduce knowledge about the Dutch political system and how it relates to comparative politics theories
Analyze contemporary challenges facing Dutch politics by using insights from the literature on the Dutch political system.

Assessment method
Written examination with short questions (and essay questions), on Tuesday 17/12/2019, 09:15 - 11:00h at room Stichthage 13.12 (above The Hague Central Station).
Retake: Wednesday 29/1/2020, 09:15 - 11:00h at room Wijnhaven 2.59.
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average of the two.
