Description

This core course treats language as a phenomenon and gives an impression of different forms of linguistic research and the associated methodical approaches. These approaches are will be addressed in practically oriented questions: How do you approach language, which questions can you ask? Which basic concepts do you need to know? How does my language fit into the spectrum of languages, etc. Students are encouraged to observe and analyze language through a problem-based-learning approach. The following topics are covered in the course: the word, sounds, language acquisition, writing, the sentence, typology and language families, language variation and language change.

Course objectives

Insight into what language (science) is; knowledge of the basic concepts and methods of linguistic analysis.

Assessment method

Written midterm and final exam with open-ended and closed-ended questions.

Weighing

The midterm will count for 20%, the final exam towards 80% of the grade final grade.

Exam review

Time and place for exam review will be announced on Brightspace and during the lecture.
