Same as admission requirements for the BA Art History/BA Arts, Media and Society.

Description

The central theme of this lecture course is the collection, presentation, conservation and management of cultural heritage, in the past and in the present day, in a national and international context. The emphasis will be on the historical development of collections and early museums and on architectural, social and theoretical issues concerning contemporary museums, museums presentations and cultural heritage.

Course objectives

  • Students learn to distinguish the most important types of collections in various museums, archives, monuments and heritage sites and identify similarities and differences.

  • Students learn to know why and in what ways individuals and institutions have collected cultural objects and have established heritage collections.

  • Students acquire basic knowledge of the ways in which heritage collections in the course of time have been made accessible to, and have been used by various audiences.

  • Students learn to classify, characterize and analyse heritage collections.

  • Students learn to identify and understand crucial historical and contemporary museum practices and debates.

Assessment method

Assessment

Written examination (with essay questions) on the lecture series and readings.

The exam will consist of two parts:

  • written examination with essay questions) on first part of lecture series and readings: 50% of Final Grade.

  • written examination with essay questions) on second part of lecture series and readings: 50% of Final Grade.

Both parts will be taken at the same time at the end of the semester. If only one of the two exams is a fail, students only need to resit that part of the exam.

Students will have the opportunity to test their knowledge with a mock exam during the midterm.

Weighing

The weighted average of the (constituent) examinations must be at least 6.0 (= a pass).

Resit

A resit can be done for constituent examinations which are failed. As far as applicable all resits take place at the same time, after the final (constituent) examination. There will be one resit moment for the appropriate failed subtest(s). Both subtests will take an hour.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
