Chinese History in a Global Context II

Admission requirements

Basic introduction to Chinese history (BA 1 Chinese Geschiedenis tot 1911 or equivalent).

Description

This BA3 seminar focuses on the role of China in global history in the eighteenth century. We will read how China was reported on in travelogues, newspapers, and atlases; trace the sources and analyze the translation practices of early modern translators of Chinese texts; and, ask whether and how information about China helped shape cultural trends and politics in Europe. In this seminar students will be developing a historical research project relevant to the topic week by week.

Course objectives

In this course you will
*evaluate the pros and cons of national, nationalist, connective and global historiographies
*learn how and why the image of China changed in early modern and modern Europe
*question, situate and interpret original texts in the context of contemporary historical research
*learn how to develop your own historical research project step by step, either in the shape of longer paper or a BA thesis

Assessment method

Assignments: 30%
Participation: 20%
Final essay: draft (10%) and final version (40%)

The final mark will be based on all required work. The mark for the final essay should be a pass (5,5 or higher). If the student fails the final essay (5,49 or lower), this part can be resubmitted once.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
