Description
Basic Course European Union Law aims to provide students with an overview of the most important elements of European Union law. It covers institutional law issues, such as the supremacy of EU law, legal protection and the position of the institutions in the decision making process, as well as substantive law issues, such as the free movement of persons.
This course is closely connected to one of the three components of the research programme ‘Securing the rule of law in a world of multi-level jurisdiction’, i.e. the institutional structure of the Union.
Course objectives
Objectives of the course:
This course intends to introduce students to the EU legal order and is especially designed for students who do not have sufficient prior knowledge of European law. Students will be introduced to the system of case law of the European Courts of Justice and will be taught to systematically read and analyse cases as well as legislation of the EU.
Achievement levels:
After this course, students will:
have a basic understanding of the structure and nature of the EC legal order,
be able to systematically read case law of the European Courts of Justice and analyse the essential parts.

The examination syllabus consists of the required reading (literature) for the course, the course information guide and the subjects taught in the lectures, the seminars and all other instructions which are part of the course.
