Description

This course is about eating disorders (EDs) such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorders. In the course the following topics and questions are important: What are the main characteristics of EDs? Is a transdiagnostic approach of EDs useful? Is there any overlap between EDs, depression, anxiety disorders, or alexithimia? What are the consequences of ED? Why are eating disorder patients mostly women? What are the most important risk factors for eating disorders and is prevention possible? What are the main results of prevention activities? How can eating disorders be diagnosed and treated? Which treatments are the most successful? How many patients do recover and what are the main criteria for recovery of an eating disorder? What do we know about co-morbidity?

Course objectives

Students will become informed about the main characteristics, risk factors, explanations, treatments and prevention programs for eating disorders, such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorders. They will be able to use a transdiagnostic approach for the diagnosis and treatment of EDs.

Mode of instruction

Weekly lectures, videos and discussion.

Assessment method

The assessment is based on weekly assignments and a scientific paper concerning recent research publications.
