Advanced Modern Chinese: Listening and Speaking

Admission requirements

The course is taught in Mandarin. Students must have a prior level of Mandarin at least equivalent to new HSK 5 (old HSK 6) or TOCFL level 4. They must also meet all entry requirements for the MA in Chinese Studies.

Description

The selection of course listening materials (audio/video) will based on students’ research interests and contain various topics, styles and genres, for example, news, interviews, talk shows, podcasts and so on.

The course includes three components: before-class tasks, class activities, and oral presentations. First, before-class tasks consist of listening comprehension and preparation for class discussions. The before-class tasks are internet-based. Second, class activities will consist of discussions on the content of listening materials, and students express their opinions on the topics. Students will have to give oral presentations on their researches. Third, students are required to give oral presentations on their researches.

Students are also expected to prepare adequately and to contribute actively during the semester.

Course objectives

Help MA students currently at an advanced level develop their listening skills and speaking proficiency in formal and academic subjects.
Help MA students develop a good command of vocabulary, grammar, language patterns of different topics, styles and occasions (both formal and colloquial).

  • contact hours: 26 hrs (2 hrs/week, 13 weeks)

  • preparation time ( before-class tasks, class activities, preparation for listening materials, oral presentations and final exam): 114 hrs (8,5 hrs/week)

Assessment method

  • Before-class tasks 30%

  • Class activities and oral presentations 30 %

  • Final exam (listening comprehension and oral exam) 40%

The resit for the final exam is only available to students whose mark of the final exam is insufficient. The resit will then make up 100% of the mark.
