Description
This course takes the form of a series of lectures on the visual arts from the times of Constantine the Great to Tiepolo, i.e. from the Early Christian era to the final years of the eighteenth century. The first six lectures, delivered by Dr. E. den Hartog, will be dealing with the period up to the Gothic style, the next twelve lectures, presented by Dr. E. Grasman, will pay attention to the art of following centuries. The first six lectures will discuss subjects like the mosaics of Ravenna, Carolingian illuminations and Romanesque sculpture, in the next twelve lectures the focus is on painting and sculpture in the Netherlands and Italy, with special attention to aspects of style, iconography and function. A compulsory excursion within The Netherlands is also part of the course.
Course objectives
To learn to analyse and understand works of art from the Early Christian Era to the final years of the eighteenth century.
To be able to recognize and date the most important works of art from this period.
To be able to use sources on works of art from this period.
To learn to be aware of the function of art and the relationship between works of art and patrons.
To learn be aware of the most important scholarly methods of interpreting works of art.
To learn to have a critical attitude towards the art historical literature concerning this period.

Assessment method
Written examination with closed questions: 10%
Take home examination, essay concerning the excursion: 20%
Written examination with essay questions: 70%
Compensation: The final mark for the course is established by determination of the weighted average. The weighted average of all three assessments should be at least 6.0. A grades lower than 5.0 for the Written examination with essay questions is not permitted.
Re-sit: Grades lower than 5.5 can be redone once.
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for schedules, announcements, literature and PowerPoint presentations.
