Space law & policy: case studies

Course objectives
Each year two specific topics will be studied in depth and from various angles (legal, political, but also economic and technological), with the goal of providing an in-depth understanding of complex topics. Several guest lecturers from various disciplines and involved with the subject will be invited, so that with this multidisciplinary approach a comprehensive understanding will be obtained. The course will be conducted in the form of a case study and a group assignment and active participation from the students in the extensive discussions is required. Examples of topics are: telecommunications, the International Space Station, suborbital flights, the use use of space resources, Galileo, etc.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students:

  • have obtained an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the (complexity of the) subject matter;

  • are able to explain the various interdisciplinary aspects of the topics addressed and to come with analyses and possible ways of addressing these issues, and to present these.

Methods of instruction
This course consists of approximately 12 hours in total divided over 2 days of intensive exchanges between lecturers and students, usually also including several excursions (for instance to ESA/Estec and Airbus Defense and Space).Students, working in teams, are actively encouraged to reflect critically on the theoretical and practical issues presented. They can also be asked to carry out advance research on certain questions, and present the result of their reflections on the day itself.
