Adult and Old-Age Clinical Neuropsychology: Theory and Assessment

Entry requirements

Open for MSc Psychology student. For students from the master’s specialization Clinical Neuropsychology, it is either mandatory to complete this course, or the course “Child Neuropsychology: Theory and assessment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders”.

Description

This course provides theoretical foundations in the clinical neuropsychological assessment and diagnostic work-up of cognitive, emotional and/or behavioral consequences as result of (possible) neurological or psychiatric disease in adult and elderly patients. All instructors are (clinical) neuropsychologists working in the (academic) health service.
The course involves 7 lectures addressing the following content domains:
General principles of clinical neuropsychology
Functional Neuroanatomy
Dementias
Traumatic Brain Injury
Cerebrovascular Disease
Neuropsychiatric Disorders
Neuropharmacology

Course objectives

On completion of the course students have obtained
1) Detailed understanding of the affective, behavioural and cognitive manifestations of diseases of the central nervous system, particularly those affecting the brain, in adults and elderly people;
2) Basic understanding of the influence of (neuro)pharmacology on cognitive functioning; and
3) Detailed understanding of neuroanatomic structures and cerebral systems.

These wide range topics that are covered are necessary for future clinical practice as well for research purposes.

Course

Students need to enroll for lectures and work group sessions. Master’s course registration

Examination

Students are not automatically enrolled for an examination. They can register via uSis from 100 to 10 calendar days before the date. Students who are not registered will not be permitted to take the examination. Registering for exams

Mode of instruction

The course consists of 7 2-hour lectures. Presence is mandatory. No weblectures are available.

Assessment method

Active participation in the course (presence is mandatory), written exam (multiple-choice and 1 essay question). The final grade is based on the MC grade (5/6) and grade on essay (1/6). The final exam will be in English.

Study material for the exam

Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 from Lezak 5th edition will be examined. Also, the contents of the lectures will be examined.

The Institute of Psychology follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences to systematically check student papers for plagiarism with the help of software. Disciplinary measures will be taken when fraud is detected. Students are expected to be familiar with and understand the implications of this fraud policy.
