Admission requirements

The following two categories of students may participate:

1. Bachelor's students of CA-DS who have passed the following 1st year's courses:

  • "Social scientific research in practice",

  • "Culture deciphered: statistics in practice",

  • "Scientific writing and academic (re) presentation" (AV1)

  • "Research practice" (AV2)

  • "The academic debate" (AV3).

2. Archeology students from Heritage and Society programme, who have succesfully passed the "Social scientific research in practice", will have acces to one designated tutorial.

Language of Instruction

This course is taught in Dutch, with the exception of one of the thematic groups which is primarily meant for the Archeology Students and therefore taught in English.

Registration / enrollment

  • Students who wish to participate in this edition of Fieldwork NL are requested to register on Blackboard before 5 September.

  • Registration in Usis for this course is required only for the lectures (and not for tutorials). On the faculty website you will find the registration periods and further information about the procedure.

  • Attendance at the first lecture on September 5 is mandatory. During this meeting, we will go deeper into different themes and students can sign up for working groups.

Description

On September 5th students will make their choices based on the themes presented by the supervisors. A research design will be written on the basis of compulsory workgroup meetings and specific assignments. Students will undertake research, approved by the supervisor, for three weeks in the Netherlands or Flanders. During their research students will be accommodated by host families; the students will write reports of their investigations. More detailed information follows on Blackboard.

Course objectives

The objective of this course is to learn how to undertake research independently but within a team. Participants in this programme will complete all phases of the research, which means they must, among other things:

  • elaborate a chosen research theme;

  • put into practice research based on a theory;

  • write a design;

  • collect research data;

  • analyse and report on their data;

  • present their work a one-day conference (a research seminar).

Schedule

  • The course has 2 compulsory lectures: an introductory lecture and the post fieldwork lecture.

  • The course has eleven compulsory tutorials of 2 hours: 6 meetings in the first semester and 5 in the second semester. The working groups of the first semester take place on the Thursdays and in the second semester on the
    Tuesdays - see the schedule for exact times and room numbers.

  • Fieldwork itself takes place in weeks 2 to 4 of 2019.

  • The final conference will take place in late April the Pieter de la Court building.

Exact times and room numbers of tutorials will be announced on Blackboard together with available research themes.

Mode of instruction

Total 10 ECTS = 280 sbu (study hours)

  • lectures: 2 × 2 hours (6 sbu)

  • tutorials: 5 × 2 hours in the 1st semester and 3 × 2 hours in the 2nd semester (32 sbu)

  • assignments resulting in the research design and final report (122 sbu)

Assessment method

There are 2 assessment moments for this component.

1) Testing of research design:

  • Joint contribution: 20% of final mark

  • Individual contribution: 25% of final mark
    Fieldwork may be taken into account only if both marks are adequate.

2) Review of research and final report:

  • Joint contribution: 30% of final mark

  • Individual contribution: 25% of final mark
    Printed and a digital (pdf) versions of the final research report must be submitted to the Secretariat CA-OS.

Only the final mark is registered in Usis and tests may be re-taken if grades are inadequate (grade 5 and lower).
The best Fieldwork-NL rapports are annually rewarded with The Prof.dr. J.D. Speckmann Prize.
