Description

This course will take the form of an introduction to the phonetics of modern English. In the practical component of the course, attention will be paid to phonemic transcription.

  • learn the properties of English phonemes and how to describe them, both singly and in combination;

  • learn the symbols needed to transcribe phonemically.

Weighing

  • Three in-term quizzes (30%)

  • Written exam (70%)

The in-term quiz average is based on the three highest marks obtained; the lowest mark of the four quizzes does not count towards the final mark. To pass the course, a minimum of 5.5 is required for the written exam.

Resit

When the mark for the written exam is 5.49 or lower, the exam will have to be retaken during the resit period. There is no resit for the in-term quizzes.

Attendance

Attendance is compulsory. Missing more than two tutorials means that students will be excluded from the tutorials. Unauthorized absence also applies to being unprepared, not participating and/or not bringing the relevant course materials to class.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
