Advanced Master Class: The Classical Body

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Classical Archaeology, Art History, Classics or Ancient History;

  • Admission to the Research Master programme in a relevant field.

Description

The Master class will deal with an important, timely and quintessentially interdisciplinary subject that is relevant for archaeologists, classicists, ancient historians and art historians alike and highly debated within these fields at present: the Classical body.

This subject will be explored theoretically and practically through intensive reading, discussion and museum assignments that will take place in a single period of 7 to 10 days.

Set-up of the course

The Master Class will take place in a single period of 7 to 10 days and will consist of intensive reading, discussion and museum assignments.

Course objectives

  • Advanced knowledge of the subject of “the Classical body”;

  • Advanced knowledge of the theoretical debates concerning embodiment and the body in Archaeology, Classics, Art History and History;

  • Ability to (critically) apply these debates to one's own (RMA) research;

  • Ability to analyse, summarise and critically comment on the relevant data concerning these topics;

  • Ability to express a critical and well-argued view on the debate.

  • Intensive reading;

  • Discussion;

  • Museum assignments.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • Attendance;

  • Literature;

  • Assignments;

  • Final essay (5 ec).

Assessment method

  • Critical stance and participation in the masterclass (50%);

  • Assignments and final essay (50%).

All assessment deadlines (exams, retakes, paper deadlines etc.) can be found in the RMA and RMSc examination schedule.

Registration

Registration via uSis is mandatory.

  • The Administration Office will register all BA1 students for their tutorials (not lectures; register via uSis!).

  • BA2, BA3, MA/MSc and RMA/RMSc students are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time.

  • The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, students are not required to do this in uSis.

Remarks

  • Compulsory attendance;

  • There is a maximum of 12 students for this course. The amount of students from the Archaeology department that can participate will be minimally 6, but there may be more places available depending on the amount of students from the Faculty of Humanities that register for this course.
