The Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in Public International Law is an intensive, high-level postgraduate programme in public international law.

The objective of the International Criminal Law specialisation (ICL) is to provide students with advanced knowledge of, and skills in, various areas of International Criminal Law. This specialisation provides foundational knowledge in substantive international criminal law and international criminal procedure. It studies the systemic environment of international criminal law and its link to related fields (international human rights law, international humanitarian law, general public international law). It introduces students to international crimes, modes of liability, general principles of international criminal law and impediments to enforcement. Special attention is devoted to the law of international criminal courts and tribunals (International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, International Criminal Court) and the link to legal practice. The Master of Advanced Studies in Public International Law has been designed to provide a framework for intensive, high-level study in Public International Law. The programme offers students the opportunity to acquire an advanced knowledge of this branch of law, while at the same time allowing them sufficient freedom to specialise in one of two areas. This programme succeeds the LL.M. in Public International Law which has been delivered for nearly 15 years, with some modifications in the range and content of the courses.
The overall objective of the programme is to provide students with advanced knowledge on the foundations of Public International Law, and to familiarise them with the state of current research.
The programme aims at providing students with skills that:
— enable them to thoroughly analyse and interpret legal sources, literature, and complex cases,
— to research and formulate an independent opinion on international legal questions,
— to clearly present findings both orally and in writing both to legal specialists as well as to non-lawyers,
— to actively participate in academic debate, and the professional application of advanced academic knowledge in Public International Law.
Due to its structure and objectives, the programme may be of interest to a diverse audience of participants wishing to pursue a career either in interna¬tional organisations, governmental institutions, international non-govern¬mental organisations, or within an academic setting. For those already work¬ing in these fields, the programme offers a valuable opportunity to broaden and deepen their existing knowledge.
