This course provides a broad overview of qualitative methodologies in linguistics, focusing on case study, discourse analysis, questionnaire, interview, and integrated methods. Emphasis is placed on: 1) understanding how studies are designed to respond to specific questions, including how questions are derived from prior theory and research; and 2) how validity is assessed, including what counts as evidence and what makes data analysis systematic. To that end, students in the course will read explanations of prominent qualitative methodologies; critically analyze research reports employing those same methodologies; write a qualitative research design for an original research project; and share that research design in an oral presentation.
