Cognitive Neuroscience of Language


Admission requirements

Previous knowledge of cognitive neuroscience and/or psycho- and neurolinguistics and basic descriptive/inferential statistics is desirable.


This course covers neural models of language processing in healthy and language-impaired adults. Also, methods to study language processing in the human brain are discussed. Specifically, neural models of speech perception and production, language comprehension and production, bilingualism and language disorders are covered. The goal of the course is to gain knowledge about methods and theoretical models and controversies in cognitive neuroscience of language and to be able to critically evaluate methods and models in cognitive neuroscience of language. The course is suitable for students interested in the relationship between language processing and the human brain.

Mode of instruction

Assessment method

Every lecture (except the first two) starts with a mini-test with multiple choice questions about the study material corresponding to the weekly topic. Additionally a final exam will test the ability of students the describe the obligatory study material. The average grade of the best 9 out of 10 mini tests + the final exam will count for 70% of the grade, and test learning goal (1).
-Students write a research proposal about one of the topics covered during the course, that will count for 30% of the final grade, as a test of learning goal (2) and (3).
Each of the components above (tests, proposal) need to be 55% to pass.

Inspection and feedback

Only the exam can be resited
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Selected Chapters from Kemmerer (2015). Cognitive Neuroscience of Language. New York: Psychology Press.
Chapters will be supplemented with obligatory supplementary papers.
