Description
You are at the start of your master program. You probably already have found out that, in contrast to many bachelor programs, planning of the master program Biomedical Sciences in Leiden is done by you. The master program is not set in stone, but consists of a variety of courses and internships that you select for yourself. During your master you will acquire of lot of knowledge on subjects such as genetics, immunology, neuroscience and/or molecular biology etc. etc., all depending on the subjects you choose. At the same time, you will further develop your academic skills, such as logical thinking, creativity, perseverance, communication and personal development. These skills can be used in numerous and divers ways and will help you in your further career. The course Career Orientation supports you in your decisions on the content of your master program and helps you to prepare for the job market.
The assignments and activities within Career orientation stimulate you to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses and to find out which career direction you would like to pursue. You get to know the job market for Biomedical Scientists by meeting researchers, alumni and employers during the various activities within this course. You will practice how to present your professional profile to your network. Entering the job market should feel like a logical follow-up of your activities in the master and this course offers the opportunity to find out what you can and want to do with your master degree Biomedical Sciences.
Course objectives
During the course students:
Reflect on their knowledge, skills, experience, goals and study choices
Reflect on their skills, their development and points for improvement, based on the feedback they receive in the (interim) evaluations of the research projects (JRP-I and JRP-II)
Formulate learning goals for their JRP-II on the further development of their academic skills and reflect on them after their JRP-II
Identify and reflect on their career and lifestyle preferences
Learn about the job and career options for Biomedical Scientists
Actively pursue career ideas
Learn about actions they can take to prepare for the transition from study to work
Learn how to present your professional profile to your network

All course and group schedules are published on our LUMC scheduling website or on the LUMC scheduling app.
Mode of instruction
Instructions are provided via the Brightspace module Career orientation, labeled with your study year. Reflection assignments will subsequently become available during the master program and have to be turned in digitally. Feedback to the assignment will be provided digitally.
Activities can be undertaken during the whole master program of the student and students make their own selection and planning of activities.
Assessment method
Pass/no pass.
Assignments have to be handed in before the deadlines that will be communicated via Brightspace. Reports of the activities have to be handed in within 10 days after the specific activity. To pass the course a complete portfolio has to be handed in at the end of the master.
