Environmental Governance

Vak
2020-2021

Admission requirements

None, but one of the 100-level EES/GED Sharing Scarcity courses (previously: Foundations of Common Pool Resource Management) is recommended.

Description

This course investigates contemporary forms of environmental politics and governance. In recent decades, industrial pollution and anthropogenic climate change have put ‘the environment’ on the political and policy agenda. Increasingly, governments propose plans to tackle environmental problems in a variety of ways. The goal of this course is to offer BA students with an understanding of pressing environmental governance issues of today, including the ‘wickedness’ of environmental problems, prospects of green state regulations, the rise of green capitalism, environmental citizenship, and issues of inequality and justice. Governance approaches are explored in urban, national and transnational contexts. The course will also address the role of private stakeholders and civil society actors, in a wider governance perspective. Throughout the course, special emphasis is put on governance related to climate change.

Course Objectives

  • Characterise different types of environmental governance;

  • Explain the role of state and non-state actors in environmental governance;

  • Reflect on normative aspects underlying environmental governance.
