Admission to the Master Biomedical Sciences

Description

You are at the start of your master program. You have already discovered that, in contrast to many bachelor programs, planning of the master program Biomedical Sciences in Leiden is largely up to you. The master program is not set in stone, but consists of a variety of courses and internships that you select based on your preferences. The course Career Orientation supports you in making your decisions on the content of your master program and helps you to prepare for the job market. During your master you will acquire a lot of knowledge on various biomedical subjects depending on the choices you make. At the same time, you will further develop both hard and soft skills, such as knowledge, creativity, commitment, working in multi- and interdisciplinary teams, and communication. These skills can be used in numerous and diverse ways and will help you in your future career.

The assignments and activities within Career Orientation are designed to stimulate you to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as well as you career options and choices. You will get to know the broad job market for Biomedical Scientists by meeting researchers, alumni and employers during the various activities within this course. You will practice how to present your professional profile to your network. Entering the job market should feel like a logical follow-up of your activities in the master and this course offers the opportunity to find out what you can and want to do with your master degree Biomedical Sciences.

Course objectives

During the course you will:

  • Reflect on your knowledge, skills, experience, goals and study choices

  • Reflect on your development and points for improvement, based on the feedback you received with the (interim) evaluations of the internships (JRP-I and JRP-II)

  • Formulate learning goals for yourJRP-II on the further development of your academic skills and reflect on them after your JRP-II

  • Identify and reflect on your career and lifestyle preferences

  • Learn about the job and career options for Biomedical Scientists

  • Actively pursue career ideas

  • Learn about actions you can take to prepare for the transition from study to work

  • Learn how to present your professional profile to your network

Timetable

Due dates for assignments and dates of orientation activities are communicated via the Brightspace module Career Orientation of your study year.

Mode of instruction

Instructions are provided via the Brightspace module Career orientation, labeled with your study year. Reflection assignments will consecutively become available during the master program and have to be turned in digitally by the indicated deadlines. Feedback to the assignments will be provided digitally.
Activities can be undertaken during your whole master program; you can make your own selection and planning of activities within indicated guidelines.

Assessment method

Pass/no pass.
Assignments have to be handed in before the deadlines that will be communicated via Brightspace. To pass the course a complete portfolio has to be handed in at the end of the master.

Registration

Registration for FOS courses, H2W, Scientific Conduct, Course on Lab Animal Sciences and CRiP takes place in lottery rounds in the beginning of July. After the lottery rounds: if you want to register for a course you are kindly asked to contact the student administration at masterbms-courses@lumc.nl.
