Admission requirements

Similar to the admission requirements of the BA Art History.

Description

This course is the continuation of the first-semester course Western Visual Arts and Architecture – 2000 part I. In these courses, students are presented with an overview of the art and architectural history of the “western” world until the early 21st century.

The course consists of two distinct modules. The first seven lectures constitute one module, titled “Micro and Macro Narratives in European Art, 1500-1800.” We will examine artifacts (paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, buildings, landscapes) in relation to their immediate contexts while also taking account of their larger global entanglements. A close reading of chapters 21-26 in Gardner’s Art Through the Ages. A Global History (16th edition) will provide the requisite foundation for further art historical study. At the same time, the course lectures will take aim at the soft underbelly of the “traditional” survey format, questioning its methodological assumptions and tracing its historiographical roots. Ideally, students will emerge from this class with a broader understanding of artistic developments in the early modern world and a nascent ability to understand and assess art historical narratives.

The second module, consisting of lectures 8-13, explores “Modern and Contemporary Architecture and Urban Design.” In order to address the questions that have animated design work in the past and to understand the issues that shape contemporary practice, lectures are organized around six themes: 1) The Spoils of War. 2) International Exhibitions. 3) Technological Innovations. 4) Manifestoes. 5) Competitions. 6) Revisionist Histories. By structuring the course content around a series of events, rather than individual masters, or stylistic schools, students will learn to see architecture as a product of composite effort and as a site of contention and compromise. The selected events bring multiple protagonists together in dialogue with broader social, economic and cultural forces, but our attention will remain firmly trained on the buildings shaped by these contexts.
