This is a seminar with a limited amount of participants (20 students), for Archaeology students exclusively;
This is not an optional course for the Archaeology BA3 programme. If you want to take this course as an extra-curricular course in your programme, you should ask permission from the Board of Examiners. You can only be admitted with permission, with proper argumentation, and only if there are spots left.
This seminar will introduce the students to the definitions used in maritime archaeology and cultural heritage management.
This course has two possible scenarios. If the situation concerning COVID permits it at the moment the course starts, the basis of the course is a field trip of 7 days (OPTION 1).
If there are restrictions and other measures in place due to COVID, OPTION 2 will apply. If the situation does not permit us to travel or form a large group of people, then this will be either a course taught on campus, online, or a combination of the two.
By taking students to an area with multiple maritime components, we will dissect the landscape, its culture and the role it plays in the identity of the people living there. Under the guidance of the lecturer and (a) local expert(s), students will do the full assessment of the area by themselves.
Lectures will prepare you each day for the fieldwork to come and organised discussion will help you to develop your plans, and to get a better insight in the area.
Each day certain elements of the area will be investigated: the archaeological sites, museum collection, built heritage and landscapes will all be looked at in the context of the maritimity of the area.
The students and lecturer will have a meeting prior to the field trip. The meeting (approximately one month prior to the trip) will reveal the field trip's destination and what will be examined. Also, instructions will be given on what should be done to prepare for the trip.
After the fieldtrip there will be time (one month) to prepare the last version of the report. The second half-day meeting will be scheduled approximately 2 weeks after the trip.
The students will select a maritime landscape which they will individually dissect and describe themselves with the help of the lecturer and their fellow-students.
Each week more information will be published on BrightSpace, which will also relate to an assignment. This will be discussed during a weekly live-meeting.

Each week, a 2-hour LIVE class;
For the assignments, students have to go out in the field, each week with a fellow student;
Learning about definitions in maritime archaeology, maritime landscapes and cultural heritage management;
Learning about taking the maritime perspective;
Learning how to dissect the (cultural) landscape;
Learning how to manage a maritime cultural landscape;
Learning to work together in making one product;
Learning about one certain selected area.

One joint final report made up of different elements that are being assigned to the students;
The assessment will be based on the activities during the trip, level of co-operation, presentations, and on the basis of the report (mainly) of which each student has to write a part.
Co-operation during class and fieldwork.
Each week will have its individual assignment, which will be graded. The final assignment is an overall assignment and will be graded heaviest.
Only the final assignment can be retaken.

The students will be assessed throughout the field trip.
The presentation has to be made during the meeting 2 weeks after the field trip. The report has to be handed in 4 weeks after the field trip.
Since in this option, co-operation is key, only in special circumstances a retake can be done. This decision will be made by the lecturer.
Assessment will take place on the basis of attendance during lectures (you can only miss 1 class), co-operation, and the assignments. Each week an assignment will be given which makes 10% of the final grade. The last assignment will be 40% and consists of parts of the earlier assignments plus additional information.
The reading list will be announced prior to the field trip.
Registration in uSis is mandatory. You can register for this course until 5 days before the first class.
Registration in uSis automatically leads to enrollment in the corresponding Brightspace module. Therefore you do not need to enroll in Brightspace, but make sure to register for this course in uSis.
You are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time. The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, you are not required to do this in uSis.
