Description
Students learn to produce, recognize, transcribe, and analyze speech sounds during the lectures and the practice sessions. They will be confronted with speech sounds they are familiar with and with speech sounds they are less familiar with among consonants, vowels and tone.
The course consists of a one hour lecture (held twice, once in English, once in Dutch) followed by a one hour practice session where students learn how to produce the speech sounds. The course is supported by a custom-made digital course helping the students to recognize and to describe speech sounds.
Course objectives
The course has four main objectives:
learning how to produce speech sounds
learning how to recognize speech sounds
learning to transcribe speech sounds according to the alphabet op the IPA (International Phonetics Association)
learning how to analyze and describe speech sounds

Assessment method
Written examination with closed and open questions: 60%
Dictation: 20%
Oral exam: 20%
All exams have the possibility of a resit.
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

TThis course is parallel to the Dutch course Klanken van de Wereld. If you are a native speaker fo Dutch, please register for Klanken van de Wereld.
First year’s students BA Linguistics will be enrolled in the seminars of this course by the Education Administration Office.
