Admission requirements

Admission to the MA International Relations, track European Union Studies.

Description

This course will explore the legal dimension of European integration. The EU is unique in its institutional set-up, its supranational legal order and its interplay with the legal order of its Member States. Accordingly, the course will outline on the main chapters of EU constitutional and substantive law. Special attention will be paid to the four freedoms and to fundamental rights in the EU.

Course objectives

Having successfully completed the course, students will be familiar with the main legal questions on the European Union, particularly the Internal Market. In terms of skills, the students will be able to find sources (judgments, secondary legislation) and to identify the important elements of these sources. Students will also familiarise themselves with basic principles of legal research and the application of the law to practical problem questions, including the legal method.

Assessment method

Assessment: Take home examination.

Weighing: The take home examination consists of a research question (70% of the exam mark) and a problem question (30% of the exam mark).

Resit: Any student who has not passed the final exam is eligible for the resit. This includes students who failed the final exam and students who did not submit the final exam. The resit will also consist of a research question (70% of the exam mark) and a problem question (30% of the exam mark).

Deadlines: The exam deadlines will be announced with the exams. Points will be deducted for failure to comply with the exam deadline as follows: for up to and including 24 hours, no points will be deducted; for up to and including 48 hours, 1 point will be deducted; for up to and including 72 hours, 2 points will be deducted. Exams that are submitted more than 72 hours after the deadline, even if trivial, will not be marked and thus receive 0 points. Excuses other than approved official applications for mitigating circumstances will not be accepted.

Word limit: Announced word limits are absolute. Points will be deducted for failure to comply with this requirement as follows: For up to and including 5% beyond the word limit (even if trivial), 1 point will be deducted; for up to and including 10% beyond the word limit, 2 points will be deducted. Assignments that overstep the word count by more than 10% will not be marked and will thus receive 0 points.

Feedback and inspection: Detailed feedback will be given on each individual exam. How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
