Cognitive Neuroscience of Language

Vak
2021-2022

Admission requirements

Previous knowledge of cognitive neuroscience and/or psycho- and neurolinguistics and basic experimental research methods, and basic linguistic concepts is desirable. If this is not the case, the student will be advised to study additional supplemented literature.

Description

This course covers neural models of language processing in healthy and language-impaired adults. Methods to study language processing in the human brain are thoroughly discussed. Specifically, foundational ideas about cognitive neuroscience of language, neural models of speech perception and production, language comprehension and production, bilingualism and language disorders are covered. The overarching goal of the course is to lay a foundation in theoretical models and controversies in cognitive neuroscience of language and to be able to critically evaluate methods and models by examining state of the art research in cognitive neuroscience of language. The course is suitable for students interested in the relationship between language processing and the human brain.

Course objectives

Learning goals: (1) The student is able to describe basic neuroanatomical structures involved in language processing. (2) The student is able to compare basic methods in cognitive neuroscience. (3) The student is able to analyze models in cognitive neuroscience of language. (4) The student is able to propose new research by extending and/or modifying existing research on cognitive neuroscience of language.

Timetable

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

  • Lecture

Assessment method

  • A final written exam consisting of multiple choice and short open questions will test the ability of students to describe the obligatory study material. The final exam grade will count for 70% of the grade, and test learning goal (1).

  • Students write a research proposal about one of the topics covered during the course, that will count for 30% of the final grade, as a test of learning goals (2) and (3).
Each of the components above (i.e., final exam and research proposal) needs to be sufficient to pass the whole course.

Reset

Only the final exam can be resat.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Reading list

Selected Chapters from Kemmerer (2015). Cognitive Neuroscience of Language. New York: Psychology Press.
