Familiarity with Indo-European phonology is required, e.g. by completing the course Indo-European
Phonology or Indo-European Linguistics 1. In case of doubt, please contact the teacher.

Description

This course is a continuation of and builds on Indo-European Linguistics 1. We will treat the structure of the Indo-European word and study the reconstruction of nominal endings and paradigms, with a focus on the relation between lexical accent and ablaut. Special topics are the categories gender and number in Indo-European, nominal composition, and derivation. We will conclude with a reconstruction of the pronominal system. Two recent articles on PIE nominal morphology are discussed during separate reading sessions.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge of the morphological system of the Proto-Indo-European noun and pronoun, including the categories and paradigms

  • Knowledge of the developments of this system in the main daughter languages.

  • Insight into the methodology of the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European morphology and its pitfalls.

  • Application of the principles of reconstruction.

Resit

There is a resit option. if the final mark is a 5.49 or lower, a resit will have to be submitted during the resit period.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
