Philosophy in World Traditions: Perception in World Traditions

Vak
2021-2022

Admission requirements

Admission to one of the following programmes is required:

  • MA Philosophy 120 EC: specialisation Philosophy in World Traditions

  • MA Philosophy 60 EC: specialisation Global and Comparative Philosophy

Description

The power of perception is among the most widespread properties of living beings. No wonder that both the Greek and Indian philosophical traditions offer rich analyses of this phenomenon. In treatises and especially in their rich output of commentaries on authoritative texts we find intricate discussions of the physical and psychological questions that surround perception, as well as epistemological discussions of its reliability.

In this co-taught seminar the students will be introduced to a representative sample of philosophical analysis of perception from the Greek and Indian traditions. The aim is to bring the two traditions into discussion with each other and ourselves, by developing a comparative perspective that makes the most of the possibilities of mutual enrichment and understanding.
