Admission Requirements
Prerequisites: Effective Field Theory, Quantum Theory.
Description
Building on the courses Effective Field Theory and Quantum Theory, this is a first course in the Quantum Theory of Fields, which consistently unifies special relativity with quantum mechanics, and allows the description of many simultaneously quantized excitations.
Course Objectives
A basic understanding of the topics listed below, including the ability to do computations of the most important effects.
Quantum Mechanics from a Lagrangian perspective
The path integral
Spin and the Lorentz Group
The Dirac Equation
The theory of Quantum-ElectroDynamics
Perturbation theory and elementary scattering processes

Course load
A brief calculation of the course load, broken down by:
- 136 hours - 38 hours spent on attending lectures and work sessions - 98 hours of time spent for studying the compulsory literature and reference books, for completing problem sets and preparing for the final exam.
Assessment method
Attendance of at least 70% of the work sessions and an overall grade of 6/10 in the homework assignments will provide a 1 point bonus to be added to the grade of the exam only after you have reached 5/10.
100% of the grade based on the final exam, including the possible bonus point from above.
Only the final exam can be retaken.
