Description

(ENG)
This course is dedicated to the development of the so-called "Cultural Journalism" in Italy, and its most important features - from the elzeviro, to the author's column, from authors’ interviews to agony aunts. In this course the student will familiarize with various genres and will be actively involved in the creative writing process of them, applying as well the fundamental principles of editing and publishing. In addition to this, the student will be involved in ongoing research on journalism and literature, through the direct contact with archival materials and stimulating exercises.

Concerning the time span and focus, the primary texts originate from the first half of the 20th century. A lot of famous writers wrote for the cultural pages of the Corriere della Sera (from Gabriele D'Annunzio to Benedetto Croce, from Luigi Pirandello to Grazia Deledda, Ada Negri, Massimo Bontempelli, Eugenio Montale, Curzio Malaparte and many others).
During the modernist period, journalism and literature lived a complex but also fruitful relationship, despite their different functions. The newspaper was able to benefit from the creativity, the imagination and the style coming from the literary world. Literature, for its part, has found in the newspaper a new means of dissemination. The intertwining of these two worlds has led in several cases to the creation of hybrid forms, e.g. through the Terza Pagina, especially in the form of the Elzeviro, an all-Italian genre, or through figures with a double vocation, such as the Writer-Journalist.
