Admission requirements
Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.
Description
This course addresses a wide range of approaches to studying crafting and making. These will be illustrated by case studies from the Eastern Mediterranean region. There is a strong focus on the Aegean and Greek world, from prehistory onwards.
Course objectives
Ability to absorb and work through detailed knowledge of the period, region, research problems, recent literature and current issues under consideration;
Ability to process and integrate archaeological academic data with social theory models based in social sciences, anthropology, and archaeology;
Ability to design and conduct original research and present this in oral and written form;
Ability to be critical towards current published research, and present this in both written and oral form;
Ability to plan and write a well-argued research paper;
Ability to perform individual and team-based research;
Ability to understand how high-ranking research is conducted.

Mode of instruction
Classes and discussion meetings based on assignments;
Literature study;
Self-study through individual assignments.
Course load
7 x 2 hours of lectures (1 ec);
140 pages of literature (1 ec);
Written paper of 6,000 words (2 ec);
Individual research days/time (6 ec).
Assessment method
Attendance and active presence, in class through discussions based on literature, and (joint) presentation in class (30%);
Paper (60%);
Individual/joint research and practical work (30%).
All results should be a pass, including attendance in class.

Registration
Registration in uSis is mandatory. You can register for this course until 5 days before the first class.
Registration in uSis automatically leads to enrollment in the corresponding Brightspace module. Therefore you do not need to enroll in Brightspace, but make sure to register for this course in uSis.
You are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time. The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, you are not required to do this in uSis.
