Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.
Description
This course is meant to assist you in transitioning to early career academic. As such we will focus on skills that are needed for an academic career, including grant writing, presentation skills, and peer evaluations.
We will build these skills through exploring major themes or questions in human evolution. These will include, for example, 'Hominin trophic level', 'Use of fire', 'Lumpers vs. Splitters', 'Wetland hypothesis'.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Independently search literature on a given theme in human evolution;
Critically assess current research on a theme in human evolution;
Lead a group discussion on a research theme;
Identify research lacunae within a theme;
Propose methods for addressing these lacunae;
Prepare a research proposal following the format of the NWO PhD in the Humanities grant;
Critically and constructively assess their peers’ grant applications, following a formal 'peer review' format;
Evaluate and incorporate evaluations into a revised application;
Present and defend their (updated) research proposal, again following NWO PhD in the Humanities interview style.

Mode of instruction
Seminar.
Assessment method
Active participation in group discussions, and leading of discussion on one topic (10%);
First draft of grant proposal (20%);
Final revision of grant proposal (30%);
Presentation of proposal (20%);
Peer reviews of 2 other proposals (10%+10%).
