This course is an (extracurricular) Master Honours Class aimed at talented Master’s students. Admission will be based on academic background, GPA and motivation.
During this course, you will work in multidisciplinary teams to identify a challenge in the field of health and wellbeing. You and your team will then work on innovative (business) ideas or solutions, using co-creation methods, design thinking, and rapid prototyping to address this challenge.
Each year, this Honours Class centers around a different theme. For this year, the theme is: Scarcity in Health and Wellbeing.
During the course, we will have two types of sessions each week:
1. An inspirational seminar in which you will learn about trends and developments in health and wellbeing, and entrepreneurship in health and wellbeing, in interaction with experts and beneficiaries from practice. Some seminars will be hybrid, but the majority will be face-to-face.
2. A Q&A meeting, in which you will learn about innovation techniques and methods, through a flipped classroom approach. The Q&As are face-to-face.
These two types of sessions combined will allow you to fall in love with the problem underlying your challenge, acquire basic innovation skills and develop suitable and attractive solutions for your beneficiaries. In coaching and team sessions you will further advance your innovation skills and your proposed solution.
During this course, you will co-design, validate and test ideas with experts and stakeholders from practice, at each stage of the design process This means that this is a high-paced, hands-on course, which includes quite a lot of practical work (including interviews and other participatory research approaches). By the end of this course, you will have gone through the first phases of an innovation trajectory, and will have developed various innovation and entrepreneurial skills.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
gained scientific insights about health, prevention and lifestyle interventions;
gained insights in the processes and factors underlying wellbeing;
gathered basic understanding of the innovation cycle for need-driven ideation and what this means in the context of health and wellbeing(design thinking);
practiced interacting with stakeholders from practice, and collecting data about their needs, wishes and desires;
practiced the first phases of innovation according to a design-thinking cycle;
experienced comprehensive learning on developing a user-centric, demand-driven idea, validated by co-creation and repetitive interviews;
gone through development methods (rapid prototyping) for iterative prototyping;
acquired insights in teamwork processes as well as insight into their own team role;
learned soft-skills (presenting, pitch training, leadership and management) to communicate with stakeholders, investors and business partners.
The sessions of the class will take place twice a week: on Tuesdays from 17.15 - 18.15 (April 4, 11, 18, 25; May 9, 16; June 13) and seminars on Thursdays from 19.00 - 20.30 (April 6, 13, 20; May 4, 11, 25; June 8, 22).

This course is worth 5 ECTS, which means the total course load equals 140 hours:
Innovation workshops: 7 lectures of 1 hr (participation is mandatory 7 hrs);
Seminars: 7 seminars of 1.5 hrs (participation is mandatory, 10,5 hrs);
Final presentation event of 1.5 hrs;
Literature reading: 2 hours/week (16 hrs);
Practical work: 3 hours/week (28 hrs);
Preparation for practical work, coach sessions and teamwork: 3 hours/week (28 hrs);
Assignments, individual journal and presentation (50 hrs).
