None. But previous training in Hebrew, Aramaic or another Northwest Semitic language will be helpful.

Description

In this course students will learn to read Ugaritic texts. After a brief introduction to the grammar of Ugaritic, additional linguistic skill will be developed through reading texts initially in transcription and later from photographs.

Course objectives

Studwents will learn Ugaritic grammar and get a grounding in the city’s material culture, history and literary production.

Mode of instruction

Seminar.
In addition to the regular seminars there will be 5 tutorials during which we will investigate topics that have arisen in the main seminar sessions in more depth.

  2. Handcopy of a selected ugaritic tablet
  3. presentation
  4. 4,000 word essay

Weighing

  1. Participation: 10%
  2. Handcopy of a selected ugaritic tablet: 10%
  3. Presentation: 20%
  4. 4,000 word essay: 60%

The final mark for the course will be determined by using the weighted average of these marks.

Resit

Should the overall mark be unsatisfactory, the paper is to be revised after consultation with the teacher.

Inspection and feedback

Essay feedback tutorials will be offered (students who would like one, should request it from the the lecturer).
