This is a seminar with a limited number of participants (30 students), for Archaeology students exclusively;
BA3 students who want to take this course: please contact the Administration Office. You can only be admitted if there are spots left, BA2 students will have priority.
Description
This seminar will be an introduction to maritime and underwater archaeology and cultural heritage management.
You will be exploring these themes within the context and definition of the maritime landscape. How can we investigate the landscape when we put water as a means of transport and connectivity right in the middle? And how has this influenced the people living in it? How do the people living in it influence the maritime landscape and shape it according to their needs? Why do boats and ships tell so much about the environment and the society in which they were made? These questions will be addressed during this course.
In a small group, through a landscape of choice, you will analyse and answer the questions above. In a day-long excursion, all these elements will come together and through role plays the position of stakeholders will be explored.
Each week information will be published on BrightSpace, which will relate to an assignment, focused on the analyses of the maritime landscape.
Course set-up
Weekly lecture of two hours;
Each week on the same day, materials and assignments will be published on Brightspace;
Each week an assignment will be given to explore elements of the maritime landscape;
Excursion.
The excursion will take place in The Netherlands and will consist of a full day, probably in a weekend. If you are unable to participate you cannot complete the course.
Course objectives
Learning about definitions in maritime archaeology, maritime landscapes and cultural heritage management;
Learning about taking the maritime perspective;
Learning how to dissect the (cultural) landscape;
Learning how to manage a maritime cultural landscape.

The excursion is an obligatory component and will take a whole day. At the beginning of the course we will schedule this excursion together (it may take place on a weekend).
Assessment method
- Final graded assignment (100%).
The final assignment is based on the weekly assignments that all have to be submitted and only one can be a fail.
Only the final assignment can be retaken.

Registration
Registration start dates for the BA2 seminars differ from the registration dates of the regular courses.
Registration will take place with the use of forms. These will be e-mailed by the study advisers to all BA2 students and pre-master students at the beginning of March 2024.
The Administration Office will register all Archaeology BA2 students in uSis for their seminar exams. However, confirmation of these exams in MyStudymap is mandatory. No confirmation = no participation!
