Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.
Description
The Research Master is a first step in an academic career. Besides research skills, academic positions require teaching skills as well. Teaching skills should be developed as soon as possible, under the guidance of a supervisor.
This module is the second step in developing teaching skills. In your second RMA year, you participate in the teaching programme of the Faculty through the Teaching Assistance 2 course.
Generally, this means that you will assist in one of the courses in the Bachelor Archaeology programme, while the teacher of that course will be your supervisor.
Tasks may vary from assisting in the set-up and organisation of the course to the coaching of students, giving feedback to assignments and papers, and leading discussions.
Course set-up
A teaching assistant coaches BA1 or BA2 students for one entire block. The teaching can differ from course to course and may comprise feedback, but also on-campus or online tutorials.
Course objectives
Each teaching assistant should acquire teaching skills. At least three of the course objectives mentioned below should be met.
Ability to:
Set up and organise a tutorial or seminar;
Give constructive feedback on written or oral assignments;
Coach students in a constructive manner;
Assess the quality of student assignments according to a formative protocol (pass/fail);
Formulate discussion points and lead a discussion;
Formulate assignments related to course objectives;
Use Brightspace as a teaching tool.

Mode of instruction
Assisting in a course in the Bachelor Archaeology programme, under supervision. Instructions will be given by the lecturer.
During the year at least two intervision meetings will be organised and hosted by the coordinator, in which you can discuss your experiences with your peers.
Assessment method
- Reflection report (100%).
The teaching assistant has to write a reflection report that follows the guidelines listed on Brightspace. In the reflection report the tutorial is reviewed and personally faced challenges and gained experience are discussed.
The teaching assistance will not be graded, but will be evaluated by the students. The evaluation of the students should be included and reflected upon.
A retake is not possible.
Assessment deadline
The report needs to be submitted through Brightspace before the start of the next semester.
