Description
This course covers the concepts, principles, techniques and tools used in conceptual modelling of large-scale enterprise information systems. It discusses the models and notations used in the requirements and analysis phases of the software development process using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The objective of the course is to provide an in-depth understanding of the core set of diagrams available for modelling the structural and dynamic aspects of complex systems in industrial environments.
Course objectives
Students will attain an understanding of:
The core set of UML diagrams used for modelling the structural and dynamic aspects of large-scale computer systems, i.e. those that are used 80% of the time, versus more advanced, but less used, diagrams.
The different forms of syntax (visual, textual) and semantics (informal and formal) of modelling languages.
The different development methodologies that UML supports, such as data driven, use case driven, process driven.
The role of advanced technologies such as model driven architectures (MDA), model driven engineering (MDE), and low code platforms.
The different ways in which UML is applied in projects: white boarding; documentation; code generation; executable models.
An introduction to the functionality of commercial UML modelling tools, focusing on modelling functionality, as well as code generation capabilities, and a demonstration of advanced NLP research tools.
The course consists of lectures and an in-depth team based practical component that focuses on the requirements analysis of an end to end application to be deployed in a service oriented architecture.
Timetable
You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.
MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).
For more information, watch the video or go the the 'help-page' in MyTimetable. Please note: Joint Degree students Leiden/Delft have to merge their two different timetables into one. This video explains how to do this.
Mode of instruction
6 Interactive lectures.
Assessment method
Team based modelling assignment report: 50%
Team based presentation and discussion of the assignment report: 30%
Team based modelling assignment: 20%
The teacher will inform the students how the inspection of and follow-up discussion of the assignment results will take place.

Registration
Every student has to register for courses with the new enrollment tool MyStudyMap. Please see this page for more information.
Please note that it is compulsory to both preregister and confirm your participation for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course. Confirming your exam participation is possible until ten days before the exam.
