Beschrijving
This module addresses how citizens, professionals and public managers operationalize the ideal of the healthy society on a local level in cities. The governing ideal of ‘the healthy city’ represents a fundamental shift in how we view health: from individual biophysical models of health towards holistic and contextual notions of health that presuppose interconnectedness of place, health, economic livelihood and well-being of communities. This conceptual shift is promoted by city governments in new policy discourses and (policy) experiments, such as cross-sector collaboration (i.e. joining up health, welfare, work, education), community ‘greening’ initiatives, and urban labs that promote resilience in neighbourhoods. These experiments create new challenges with regards to governance, professional roles and inclusion of citizens in vulnerable situations.

Conceptualize the phenomenon of ‘the healthy society’ as a new governing ideal
