Disclaimer: This course will be offered four times in this study year, in semester one in English and in Dutch, and in semester two one in English and in Dutch.

Skills: Negotiation, conflict management, cooperation, dispute resolution, analysing conflicts.

Admission requirements:

This course is an (extracurricular) Honours Class: an elective course within the Honours College programme. Third year students who don’t participate in the Honours College, have the opportunity to apply for a Bachelor Honours Class. Students will be selected based on i.a. their motivation and average grade.

Description:

A society without conflicts is an Utopia! Every day you are introduced to small or complex disputes on different social levels in the world. Conflicts and the way we deal with them play an important part of our personal and professional life. Not only our personal skills are important in dealing with these complex situations. Also understanding of the development of the process and recognition of other aspects which play an important role in solving difficult disagreements will help you to achieve better results.

This Honours Class will introduce you to the science and practice of dispute resolution and negotiation on different social levels (international, business, and personal). You will learn to analyse different conflicts and will be able to train and expand your skills.

Course objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students have:

  • Gained insight in theories on conflict management, negotiation (MGA), and mediation;

  • Learned about the science and practice of dispute resolution and negotiation on different social levels (international, business, and personal);

  • Learned to analyse different conflicts;

  • Gained insight into their own conflict management and negotiation style;

  • Developed their negotiation skills in simulations;

  • Developed their mediation skills in role plays.

The sessions of this hybrid class will be held on Thursdays from 17.15 - 21.00.

Session 2: 19 October
Negotiation and introduction on Mutual Gains Approach (online)

Session 3: 26 October
Negotiation simulation (online)

Session 4: 9 November
Mutual Gains Approach with guest lectures by mr. F. Evers and prof. L. Susskind (MIT) (Kamerlingh Onnes building, room B0.26)

Session 5: 16 November
Mediation (workshop) (Kamerlingh Onnes gebouw, kamer B0.26)

Session 6: 23 November
Mediation (workshop) with guest lecturer Linda Reijerkerk (Kamerlingh Onnes building, room B0.20 and B0.26)

Session 7: 28 November
International Roleplay (Lipsius building, rooms 1.20, 1.21, 1.23, 1.28, 1.30, 1.33)

Course load and teaching method:

This course is worth 5 ECTS, which means the total course load equals 140 hours:

Assessment methods:

The assessment methods will look as follows:

  • 70% individual writing assignment, analysis of an international conflict/negotiation;

  • 30% active participation in Class and some group- and homework assignments.

Students can only pass this course after successful completion of all partial exams.

Brightspace and uSis:

Brightspace will be used in this course. Upon admission students will be enrolled in Brightspace by the teaching administration.

Please note: students are not required to register through uSis for the Bachelor Honours Classes. Your registration will be done centrally.

Application process:

Submitting an application for this course is possible from Monday 21 August 2023 up to and including Tuesday 12 September 2023 23:59 through the link on the Honours Academy student website.

Note: students don’t have to register for the Bachelor Honours Classes in uSis. The registration is done centrally before the start of the class.
