Admission requirements

  • This course is only open to students in the BA Midden-Oostenstudies.

  • Successful completion of Modern Standard Arabic 2

  • This course has the following co-requisites: ‘Arabic Texts 1: Stories’, ‘Media Arabic,’ and ‘Modern Standaard Arabisch 4: gevorderde grammatica’.

Description

In this course, students practice reading and writing in Arabic at the high-beginning, low intermediate level. The course will help students gain control of Arabic structures, and construct their own Arabic sentences with ease. The course also discusses such cultural aspects as family and gender roles in the Arab world, the cultural construct of the Arab market, holidays/feasts, etc.

Course objectives

The course will help students gain control of their Arabic, and be able to read, and write about a variety of topics such as shopping, family relations, making preparations and arrangements, asking for and giving advice, instructions and directions.

Assessment method

The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average of the following:

Partial Assessment Weighing
Classroom participation 10%
Quizzes 10%
Project 10%
Homework 20%
Final exam 50%

Resit

If the final grade is below 6.0 there is the possibility to resit for 60% of the grade (which will replace the grades for the quizzes and final exams). The grades for homework and participation cannot be retaken and will count towards the final grade.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
