Beschrijving
This course will help students gain an overview of the field of computer science, how it fits into the academic and business landscape, and its impact upon society. It will also introduce students to specific interests of researchers at LIACS.
An important goal of this course is to instil the idea that computer science is a scientific discipline and therefore requires analytical thinking and scientific presentation of results. Students will gain experience in creative teamwork and scientific communication.
Leerdoelen
Upon completion of the course, students will have a broad understanding of the field of computer science, its methods, history, ethics, and applications. In particular:
Students will be able to define the field of computer science, explain its relationships with other sciences, and describe its use of various scientific methods
Students will be able to describe major milestones and contributions of influential individuals in the history of computer science
Students will be able to examine and critique current events in the field, based on literature
Students will be able to assess software applications against privacy rules and ethical guidelines
Students will be able to conduct teamwork to carry out ideation, design, prototyping, and reporting phases of a small creative project in the area of software design

Assessment is based on the successful completion of all assignments, attendance and participation in class, and a final (written) exam.

Inschrijven
Aanmelding voor vakken verloopt via uSis. Hiervoor is de uSis-code van het vak nodig, die te vinden zijn in de Studiegids. Meer info over het inschrijven voor vakken of tentamens is hier te vinden.
MyTimetable
In MyTimetable (login) kun je alle vak- en opleidingsroosters vinden, waarmee jij je persoonlijke rooster kunt samenstellen. Onderwijsactiviteiten waarvoor je je via MyStudymap hebt ingeschreven, worden automatisch in je rooster getoond. Daarnaast kun je My Timetable gemakkelijk koppelen aan een agenda-app op je telefoon en worden roosterwijzigingen automatisch in je agenda doorgevoerd; bovendien ontvang je desgewenst per e-mail een notificatie van de wijziging. Je kunt notificaties aanzetten bij Instellingen, na login.

Brightspace
Inschrijving voor vakken verloopt via uSis. Wanneer je je hier inschrijft voor een bepaald vak krijg je automatisch ook toegang tot de omgeving van dit vak via Brightspace.
