Students should be sufficiently proficient in English and Dutch. This course is part of the premaster Translation and cannot be taken separately.

Description

The aim of this premaster course is to familiarize its participants with the practice of doing an annotated translation. Students will learn how to do a source text analysis and justify their translation decisions in the form of annotations. There will be one written examination at the end of the course in the form of an annotated translation English to Dutch, with an accompanying analysis and annotations in appropriate academic Dutch.

Course objectives

  • Ability to translate a reasonably complex English text that does not contain specialist information or terminology into grammatically and stylistically correct Dutch.

  • Ability to write a source text analysis and annotations and report them in appropriate academic Dutch.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Reading list

Tutors may set reading materials based on the students’ lacunae in practical translation experience or knowledge of translation theory.
