This course is available for students on the MA Book and Digital Media Studies. Students from other programmes are welcome to approach the course coordinator for admission, but this will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Description
In the past few decades, many cultural heritage institutions have been in the process of digitising their collections. Such digitisation efforts have clearly opened a range of innovative possibilities for analysing, linking and sharing heritage materials. Humanities scholars currently have access to unprecedented quantities of machine-readable texts, and, at the same time, the tools and the methods with which we can analyse and visualise these texts are have become increasingly sophisticated. This course focuses on the various methods and approaches which cultural heritage institutions have developed to enhance the accessibility of digitised textual collections. It examines a broad range of topics, including imaging techniques, metadata standards, linked open data, digital codicology, text and data mining, crowd sourcing and digital preservation.
Course objectives
Students
gain a broad understanding of the process of digitisation;
gain knowledge of methods and standards for providing access to digital materials as well as knowledge of file formats, techniques and copyright issues;
are equipped to think about the effects of digitisation on research, society, and cultural heritage organisations;
receive hands-on experience on Text and Data Mining techniques;
become acquainted with recent scholarly debates in the digital humanties;
carry out out an individual research project, potentially as a preparation for an MA thesis within this field.

Weighing
The final grade is determined by the grade for the midterm paper (50%) and the final paper (50%).
Resit
In case of an insufficient result, the resit consists of the same parts as the first opportunity; students therefore only take the resits for those parts that were insufficient.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an resit will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the results of the papers at the latest.
