Admission requirements
To start the preparations of the thesis project the student should have 42EC of the programme Statistics and Data Science.
Description
The thesis project, in which the final examination report of the master is written, consists of two parts
o Preparation of the thesis project (4EC)
o Carry out the thesis project (30EC)
In "Preparation of the thesis project", the student follows mandatory lectures and working groups on academic integrity , reproducible research, and scientific writing and writes the proposal for the thesis project.
This course is given twice a year, in the fall and the spring semester
Course Objectives
After successful completion students are able to:
reflect on research integrity dilemmas within methodological research
follow Leiden University policies on academic integrity in their research;
discuss and debate on practical case studies and formulate an opinion on whether proper scientific conduct has been carried out;
explain the importance of working in a transparent and reproducible way;
apply tools to work in a transparent and reproducible way, such as working with scripts, GitHub and version control;
is aware of privacy regulations (European General Data Protection Regulation) and can apply them in practical situations.
can prioritize regulations in practical cases;
develop a research plan and write a proposal for their thesis, which includes a description of the background, formulation of research aims and objectives, and a work plan.
Timetable
You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.
MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

Lectures, assignments and working groups.
Assessment method
This course is grade with pass/fail. Students should be present at mandatory lectures and working groups and complete all mandatory assignments to pass the course.

Registration
It is the responsibility of every student to register for courses with the new enrollment tool MyStudyMap. There are two registration periods per year: registration for the fall semester opens in July and registration for the spring semester opens in December. Please see this page for more information.
Please note that it is compulsory to both preregister and confirm your participation for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course. Confirming your exam participation is possible until ten days before the exam.
