Admission to the MA Asian Studies (60 EC, 120 EC or research). Students from other relevant MA programmes can be admitted if places are left; students from the MA Asian Studies have priority.
Description
Our intense focus on the rise of China obscures the existing power position of Japan in the region. Moreover, in recent years, especially since the premiership of Abe Shinzo, Tokyo has begun to play an even more active role in quietly building an alternative regional order. The two developments cannot be understood separately.
This course will discuss theories of international and regional order, before moving on to historical overviews of Chinese and Japanese foreign policies. The third part discusses the ongoing contest and the various arenas in which this plays out.
Course objectives
To have the students understand theories of international regional order.
To familiarise the students with East Asian regional relations.
To have the students analyse regional relations using the theories learned.

Assessment and weighing
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average of the following:
Partial Assessment Weighing
Participation and attendance 20%
Individual reading reflections 30%
Individual research paper 50%
In order to pass the course, students need a passing mark (“voldoende”, i.e. “5.50” or higher) for the course as a whole.
Resit
The student is eligible for a resit of the final essay if the overall grade for the course is a fail.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
Reading list
The readings for this seminar consist of scholarly articles, book chapters and policy papers. They are available either on the internet or through the university library. The library catalogue is accessible via your university account. If they are entirely unavailable in digital form, a pdf file is provided via Brightspace.
